Windows Update is a service provided by Microsoft that provides updates for the Microsoft Windows operating system and its installed components. Security updates or critical updates eliminate vulnerability to known malware and security exploits. Other updates correct errors and enhance functionality. Security updates are routinely provided on the second Tuesday of each month, Patch Tuesday, but can also be provided whenever a new update is urgently required to prevent a newly discovered or prevalent exploit targeting Windows users.

Why should you not utilize automatic updates in a business setting?

• Some updates are not always wanted: for example internet explorer update.
• Updates that allows MS to monitor your system.
• Automatic update can hinder productivity. It can be really annoying to be sitting down at your PC and find out it just decided to run updates and you can not stop the process until it is done.
• Sometimes a machine will reboot itself after updates and if you remote into your system or had a project up on your machine it is gone.
• Updates are often flawed and require additional patches to fix.
• Some updates can not be undone…if negative changes are made to your system you may have to wipe and reinstall the OS (operating system).
• Software compatibility issues may ensue.
